Worker Injured in Fall

Once again a fall from height resulted in a worker being seriously injured. Falls from height are a major cause of accidents and fatalities in the construction industry. The Health and Safety Executive will prosecute any firm that are found not to take the appropriate safety precautions to avoid accidents.

A Liverpool firm have recently been prosecuted and sentenced after they failed one of their employees. A 43 year old unnamed man fell from a scaffolding tower he was working on back in 2011. As a result of his awful fall he suffered with a collapsed lung, brain haemorrhage and a fractured skull. He also broke his collar bone, fingers, wrist and ribs.  These life threatening injuries could have been avoided if his employer, CME Ceilings Ltd, had provided an adequate tower for their employee.

Multiple Problems Caused the Accident

The Health and Safety Executive investigated and they discovered a large amount of problems. The company initially ordered a scissor lift that was to be used to ensure the employee could reach the ceiling. When the scissor lift didn’t arrive on site the company provided a scaffold tower instead.  The tower was built from parts that were made from a range of different manufacturers. Each of the components were in very bad condition and not suitable to be used. When working the breaks on the scaffolding should have been applied, however this was not the case. Without the use of the breaks the tower was unable to remain still. Finally the HSE also found that there was no edge protection of boards or rails that could have stopped the employee from falling.

Shocking Injuries

The employee has had a long and painful recovery, and both the physical and mental injuries will stay with him forever. CME Ceilings were fined £5,000 for breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act.  The company has also been ordered to pay costs of £5,000.

The Health and Safety Executive hope that this case will highlight the need for companies to make sure they provide adequate equipment and apply safety measures. 38 people died because of a fall they endured at work between 2010 and 2011. On top of that there were 4000 serious injuries that required the employees to take more than three days off work.
